The Story
You play as your average college student when one day on your way to uni a sudden earthquake happens. You fall into one of the cracks and soon blacken out. When you awake you find yourself not on earth anymore. your goal is to get home but first you must find the person/object that will help you get home. As you travel throughout this new dimention you learn that there is a war going on, that is affecting other dimentions. you are required to learn new skills in fighting to help you survive your journey, you may also learn to use the Mana and Ki that other beings here use. You were not brought in this dimention to be a Hero but rather by mistake. you get a choice of which side you wish to be on or you can be on your own. The Brief
Course: BA / FdA Games Art and Design
Year: Two
Unit: BA4: Focus 1
Project Title Game Pitch
Project 1 of 3 within this unit
Start Date: 27/09/10
Study Hours: 170
Submission Date: 29/11/10
Tutor(s): TBC
Description
The objective of this project is to conceive and ‘pitch’ a comprehensive game concept to a panel of tutors and, possibly, industry professionals. The 10-minute pitch will clearly outline your nascent game concept and attempt to justify its existence and future research-
and-development.
You will need to address the core mechanics of your game – story, design and interactivity; then you will need to evidence research into the audience, platform, and marketing of your game. Your game concept will be the source of upcoming projects throughout Year two and must therefore be of significant measure.
You will take inspiration from a wide range of sources both inside and outside of games, demonstrating your artistic and cultural knowledge through referencing artists, books, films, music etc. In addition to historical and theoretical constructs, you will also need to draw upon previous knowledge of gameplay, genre, and story elements before fully realising a visual look and style in the next project: GAME DOCUMENT.
This project addresses the key areas of study as follows:
Studio Practice: You must use primary and secondary research to validate your game concept within a 10-minute PowerPoint / Keynote pitch. You will be introduced to technical presentation skills and sell sheets though a series of orchestrated workshops, seminars and lectures. Throughout the project you will be introduced to processes that relate to research and development stages you may encounter within the games sector. You will receive instruction on how to pitch an idea and exemplify concepts effectively. Initial concept designs would be a distinct advantage to illustrate your presentation. A related drawing programme will run concurrently with this project.
Business and Professional Skills: Business and Professional Skills are integrated with Project 3 (Creating Coherent Worlds). All topics covered are relevant to studio practice and inform your creative and practical decision-making.
Contextual Studies: Contextual studies runs as a separate project (Creating Coherent Worlds) throughout this unit. All topics covered are relevant to studio practice and inform your creative and practical decision-making.
Personal Development and Planning: You will keep an independent reflective journal or blog recording your own personal learning experience throughout this brief.
